Yes, I do.
Let us look at some examples from the Bible. The Sadducees and Pharisees thought very highly of themselves and looked down on everyone who was not as learned as they or as high ranking as they. One of the reasons that they hated Jesus so much was because He was showing people true love, humility, generousity…and it ate away at their conscience.
Luke 18:9-14 is a parable about this topic. On the one hand, a Pharisee who thought a lot of himself and had a holier-than-thou attitude when bragging in the temple, supposedly praying but really boasting. On the other hand, there was a humble Publican (tax-collector) who stayed in the background and said a very simple, honest prayer: “God be merciful to me a sinner” (vs 13).
We all have to deal with people who are like the Pharisee and your friends; I know I have. But their behavior is wrong. We are all equal in the eyes of God, who gave His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to die a horrible death for ALL of us! (John 3:16,17)
We all occasionally need to be reminded that humility is one of the lessons taught by Christ and throughout the Bible. Here are a few Scriptures that share the importance of having a humble attitude.
Psalms 10:4 says: “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”
Proverbs 16:18 warns: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Mark 7:22,23 is clear: “Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”
